| This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811-1899), perhaps, the most revered organ builder in history. His organs have qualities like none other. However, the organ at First Congregation Church in Berkeley by Petty-Madden, Op. 55, from 2006 comes close with specifications similar to the organs in Caens and Saint-Clothilde, Paris. We will explore Cavaillé-Coll through music, specifically through pieces dedicated to him and study the relationships between the composers and Cavaillé-Coll, along with the instruments they played. By focusing on unique characteristics in these pieces we will decode the genius behind his finest organs, such as, Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, Saint-Sulpice in Paris and, Saint-Ouen in Rouen.
